Matteo Berrettini into US Open Round 4 after epic 4 set battle with Andy Murray

2012 champion Andy Murray’s dream to return to the 4th round of a major for the 1st time since Wimbledon in 2017 was crushed by Matteo Berrettini in the men’s singles 3rd round at US Open 2022.

Andy Murray, a 3-time Grand Slam champion, came up with a courageous fight but it was not adequate as the 2019 finalist, Matteo Berrettini defeated the Scot 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(1), 6-3.

Andy Murray, who said he was in a very good place with his fitness after a very long time, and believes that there is still a lot left in his tank in a match that extended to 3 hours and 47 minutes.

Berrettini was able to breeze through the first two sets but in the third set, his illustrious forehand failed to fire as unprompted blunders crept in. Murray raised his level and kept himself in the contest, forcing a tie-breaker.

Berrettini sent down a flourishing forehand winner to disrupt Murray’s serve early in the tie-breaker but he faded away with Murray raising his intensity.

Murray began the 4th set with an initial break but he was cracked again by his opponent straightaway. The former World No. 1 displayed noticeable signs of frustration as his concentration wore off.

Murray, who participated in 3 Grand Slams for the 1st time since 2017, exhibited signs of return for form at numerous stages of his season. The Scot, who had considered retirement after going through two hip operations, should only take confidence from his run at this US Open.

Matteo Berrettini enters into the 4^th Round on the right foot with his confidence perched high. He faces Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the 2022 US Open round 4.
