Muguruza said she is not fixated on returning to the world No. 1 ranking. The two-time Grand Slam champion, got the number 1 ranking for the first time after the 2017 US Open. After finishing that season with a triumph at the WTA Finals, Muguruza climbed to the top spot.

Muguruza in a recent interview told RTVE that she prefers to focus on winning tournaments and raising glasses, because you can touch that and that she is not obsessed about regaining the number one spot.

Muguruza was happy and grateful to have tasted success in a challenging 2021.

Muguruza made it to the last round in 5 tournaments in 2021 and captured three titles. The season itself wasn’t straightforward because there were many guidelines and protocols imposed.

“The truth is that it has been a great year, and that has been hard because there have been a lot of new procedures, bubbles, at first on empty stadiums, then with some audience,” Muguruza noted.

“It’s been a packed season with the Olympics included as well. It has been a year with many challenges, but at the same time, very rewarding for me.”

Muguruza didn’t enjoy triumphs at the Grand Slam level in 2021 but still she felt it was the best season of her run so far.

The former top seed had been training in Madrid for the last week in an effort to get back to full fitness, but said in a statement she’s just not physically fit to participate.

“This is the harshest of the news and the most agonizing decision any player has to make,” Muguruza said. “We have been training hard to recuperate and be able to get to the tournament well, I came a week before time to acclimatise because I was looking ahead to doing well this year in Madrid, at my home and before my native audience.

“But the pain is back and the last MRI has established that I have not recuperated 100% to play and the medical advice is to stop.”

The 10th-seeded Spaniard was slated to face American Sloane Stephens in an initial-round clash of Grand Slam winners.

The 27-year-old Muguruza was in a commanding position against Yulia Putintseva 6-0, 2-2 in the Charleston round of 16 prior to this month when she was compelled to retire from the match after suffering the leg injury. Muguruza has not competed since and did not reveal when she may be ready to return.

Muguruza abandons her second match in Charleston due to a leg injury.

Garbine Muguruza, world no. 12, looked in great shape and form in Charleston.
She sailed past Magdalena Frech 6-1 6-3 in the first round, and she overpowered Yulia Putintseva in the following round to also lead 6-0 2-2. Then just out of the blue, Muguruza took a medical timeout, and when she returned she retired from the match, leaving everyone stunned.

Ultimately, after the match, the Spanish champion explained that she suffered a sharp pain in her left leg. She had the same problem in the first match, but she chose to keep on playing. Nevertheless, this time she opted to call it a day to avoid triggering any more damage.

“I was already experiencing some pain in my opening round match. The shift of hard courts to clay was harsh and in a very brief amount of time. I began very well, and then unexpectedly I felt a strong pain in my leg, and it got worse. I didn’t want to go on without performing my best tennis. It didn’t feel right to me,” said Muguruza after the match.

This reminds us of the period in 2017-18 when she used to frequently get leg cramps and had to withdraw from many tournaments. Her fans are hoping that he medical team can address her injury issues swiftly and effectively this time.

Garbine is not slated to play any event in the next two weeks. She will be back to contest in Madrid. The contest will start on the 26th of April. She is likely to be totally fit by that date.

Muguruza meets aggression with aggression to take down Sabalenka and advance into the Dubai Semi Final.

Garbine Muguruza describes how she planned her game to beat an over-aggressive Aryna Sabalenka in Dubai.

Garbine Muguruza is having a great week in Dubai and has reached the semifinal after beating Aryna Sabalenka for the 2nd consecutive week 3-6 6-3 6-2. Muguruza ranked #16 will now face Elise Mertens for a place in the final in the pursuit to win her 1st title in Dubai.

So How did Muguruza defeat Sabalenka again ?

During the press meeting soon after her quarter-final against the world no.8, Muguruza described that she was reasonably stunned at how aggressive Sabalenka started to play.

“I felt like she came out today more belligerent than our previous match in Qatar,” Muguruza revealed. “I felt like she needed to play more hard-hitting, faster, serving big, and I kind of labored to find my shots, my game, and she swiftly broke me with the serve.”

Then Muguruza spoke about the modifications she had to make to beat Sabalenka to say: “I attempted to be more aggressive as well. If you have someone in your face who is trying to win the point in a couple of hard hitting shots, you have to be quicker and tougher, so I tried to play the leading role after that. Then the whole thing was more evenly balanced. I felt more in the points.”

Garbine Muguruza faces Elise Mertens next.

Garbine Muguruza will play Mertens in the Dubai semifinal. The head to head is 1-0 in favour of Muguruza. When they played last, Muguruza won 2-6 6-0 6-3 in the 1st round in New York (U.S. Open) 4 years back.

Garbine loses in the Qatar final & cannot wait till next year | recuperates by taking an ice tub dip !

The Doha women’s finals turned out to be an one sided affair with Petra Kvitova defeating Garbine Muguruza 6-2 6-1 after playing a solid match to win her 28th career title, the 1st of this season.

The match lasted just over an hour and this is the 2nd time Kvitova has won the tournament.

At the finish of the match the tally revealed that Petra scored 58 points vs. Muguruza’s 38.

Kvitova kept to the high standard of her game as was expected of her and converting 56% of the break points was perhaps the tilting factor.

On the other hand, Muguruza was not at the top of her game as a result her break points conversion ratio was only 14% and that was the key factor that led to her defeat.

After their meeting at Doha, the H2H between Kvitova and Muguruza is 5-1 in favour of Petra.

This is what the players had to say:

Kvitova, who has defeated Garbine in their past 5 meetings, said: “It’s been a terrific run. I’m sorry for the 2nd time. I hope we can play someplace else.”

World number 16 Garbine Muguruza said with a positive attitude: “For a 2nd time she grabbed the title away from me, but I can’t wait to come back in 2022.”

Do you know how Muguruza recovers after every match ?

All said and done we know how Garbine recovers after any match, she uses cryotherapy (cold therapy).

Garbine Muguruza posted a funny video post one of her recent matches in which she is seen having an ice bath in her own bathroom.

Faster muscle recovery times: Current research shows that whole-body cryotherapy supports faster recovery after extreme workouts or sports. This works best if you jump into a chamber or a tub filled with ice cubes immediately after an intense workout or sport.
