Svitolina Boycott | Elina Svitolina refuses to play against Russian & Belarusian Players

Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina REJECTS to play Russia’s Anastasia Potapova in the round of 32 match of the Monterrey Open unless International Olympic Committee’s recommendations to ban Russian athletes are put in place.

The International Olympic Committee’s executive board on 25th February held that Russian and Belarusian national flags should not be exhibited at international sports events following Russia’s assault on Ukraine.

On 28th February, the International Olympic Committee’s executive board went even further and recommended sports federations to ban Russian and Belarusian contestants and representatives in any international sporting event from competing, but Elina Svitolina made her feelings known before the latest release.

‘We Ukrainian players requested to ATP, WTA and ITF to follow the recommendations of the IOC to accept Russian or Belarusian nationals only as neutral athletes, without displaying any national symbols, colours, flags or anthems,’ Svitolina said.

In a separate but related statement earlier on Monday, Ukrainian women’s tennis players including Lesia Tsurenko & Marta Kostyuk called on the Women’s Tennis Association to pull out of all tournaments from Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.

Athletes from Ukraine and other countries have insisted that international bodies to take action after Russia initiated its invasion by land, air and sea last week following a proclamation of war by President Vladimir Putin.

Why Andy Murray considers himself a feminist

Why Andy Murray considers himself a feminist?

Why Andy Murray considers himself a feminist?

In 2019 Murray marked himself a feminist saying: “Have I become a feminist? Well, if being a feminist is about fighting so that a woman is treated like a man then, yes, I suppose I have.”

Recently Andy Murray voiced his disappointment concerning the gender bias at Dubai tennis Championships.

‘A big step backwards’: Andy Murray slams huge prize money discrepancy at Dubai tennis Championships

Tennis is often perceived as a worldwide leader in gender equality with equal prize money paid to men and women at the 4 Grand Slams. But a major inconsistency revealed this week during the Dubai Championships has sparked criticism from past men’s number one, Andy Murray.

In the women’s final winner at the Dubai Championships (WTA 500 event), Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko pocketed $104,180, but her male equivalent takes home close to 5 times more equivalent to a cool $523,740.
“Evidently that’s a big step backwards, so it’s not good,” Murray told journalists during the post-match interview after his 7-5, 6-2 loss to Jannik Sinner.

“If they’re the equal size events one week apart, that’s quite a big inconsistency.”

Murray has been vocal in his support for fairness and gender equality in the sport, and has made major personal assertions like contracting former WTA tennis great, Amelie Mauresmo as his mentor and coach in 2020.

In an op-ed for The Guardian, he described the double standards at play, implying many had been critical of his choice to work with Mauresmo purely because of her gender.

“I did well with Amélie and went far into grand slam finals, but a lot of critics saw the period when we worked together as a disappointment because I didn’t gain a grand slam title,” Andy wrote. “People criticized her for that, but that wasn’t the same thought process when it came to my other coaches – it was always me who was the problem, and I would get the critique when I failed. With Amélie, the questions I would come across a lot of the time after losing matches would be about our relationship. I’ve never had that at any other time in my career when I was with male coaches.”

Murray went on to note that the “best coaches should be the best people and without gender bias” and that more women were needed in this position within professional tennis.

Iga Swiatek’s heartfelt comments for Ukraine post her win at the Qatar Open

Swiatek’s emotional comments for Ukrainians came after her 6-2 6-0 win against fourth seed Anett Kontaveit at Doha last weekend.

Newly crowned Qatar Open champion Iga Swiatek expressed her support to the Ukrainian people post Russia’s initiation of the invasion, saying she found it difficult to imagine a conflict “in the country next to me”.

“I want to show my support to all the families who are hurting in Ukraine. Seeing those pictures on the news and on social media is very emotional for me. I wouldn’t even imagine scary stuff going on like that in the country next to me. I hope that eventually it will be more safe. I also wish that looking at all the troubles we have in the world, the sport is going to connect,” she said.

“Even though we have many things splitting us, the sport is going to unite us, it’s going to bring us happiness. Thank you all for coming this evening. I hope the Ukrainian families are going to be home and safe.”

Russia’s assault on Ukraine has led to extensive reaction in sports world with many athletes in various sports denouncing the act.

Earlier, at the ATP event in Dubai, Russian player Andrey Rublev signed on the camera lens, “No war please”, after his semi-final victory over Hubert Hurkacz.

Meanwhile, former top-25 Ukrainian player, Dayana Yastremska said she and her entire family had spent two nights hiding underground in Odessa. “After spending couple of nights in the basement parking, my parents made a decision at any cost to send me and my little sister out of Ukraine! Mom,Dad, we love you very much, take care of yourself!!! I love you my country,” she wrote.

A 2nd-tier ATP Challenger event, which was scheduled to begin from February 28 in Moscow, has been cancelled. Many other sporting events in Russia have been cancelled.

Rafael Nadal defeats Cameron Norrie in straight sets to win Mexican Open title

Rafael Nadal continued winning streak in 2022 by defeating British number one Cameron Norrie 6-4 6-4 to secure the Mexican Open.

It was not long before (around the end of 2021), Nadal, 35, thought he might have to step down from professional tennis because of a foot injury, but has won all 3 tournaments he has played this year.

Rafa won a 21st major title at the Australian Open after triumphing at the Melbourne warm-up event.

“At the start of the year this was unthinkable,” said Rafael Nadal.

“A month and a half back nobody would have imagined it.”

Victory over the Brit Cameron Norrie extended Nadal’s career-best winning start to the season to a fifteenth victory.

The 4th seed, who beat incoming world number one Daniil Medvedev in the quarter finals, bagged the title in Mexico without dropping a set.

It is the 91st title of Rafael Nadal’s career and a 4th in Acapulco, having won his first as an 18-year-old seventeen years ago.

Nadal, who also won in 2013 and 2020, is now the event’s youngest and oldest champion.

Roger Federer’s thoughts on Rafael Nadal’s Australian Open Win

RAFAEL NADAL cruised past Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic by winning a record 21st Grand Slam title at the current edition of the Australian Open.

Roger Federer has ended the suspense on how he felt watching long-time foe and friend Rafael Nadal break his Grand Slam world record.

https://youtu.be/E6cej83AkHI

Roger Federer has been the most decorated man at Grand Slam level since Wimbledon 2009, with Nadal and Novak Djokovic playing catch up to his record of 20 titles.

Rafael Nadal was able to go past this benchmark in the Grand Slam race for the first time when he won the Australian Open on Sunday, attaining a record 21st Major trophy.

Federer broke Pete Sampras’ Grand Slam world record way back in 2009, winning a then-record 15th Major title at Wimbledon. Now he knows how Sampras felt almost 13 years back! Of course he also is aware on how difficult it is to break any form of world record.

Federer was one of the first players to applaud his long-standing opponent for his accomplishment in an expressive social media message, and has now shared how he felt viewing the final for the first time.

The Swiss tennis legend was nothing but happy for the 35-year-old Spaniard, admitting he knew more than anyone how challenging it was to break a record.

Andy Murray hat-trick at ATP Tour event for first time since 2019

Andy Murray has achieved three consecutive wins at the same ATP Tour event for the 1st time in more than two years after adversary David Goffin retired during their quarter-final at the Sydney Tennis Classic.

https://youtu.be/yhTnpqYYBjw

The last time the Scot achieved a hat-trick of triumphs at tour level was the European Open in Antwerp in October 2019, when he passionately won what is his only title since his hip complications began two years earlier.

But there have been encouraging indications over the last six months, most markedly that Murray has been able to play and train regularly, and he followed up an epic victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili by taking the opening set 6-2 against former top-10 star Goffin.

Victoria Azarenka off court talents : Watch this video in which Victoria Azarenka shows her talents ‘off the court’ after being confined in during practice

Former World No.1 Victoria Azarenka a short time ago shared an amusing video where she was fleeing from a locked tennis court.

Victoria Azarenka has had a difficult time with injuries in recent times.

The former World No.1 has had a diverse 2021, with the early part of her year being frustrating but then having a bounce back of sort during the latter half.

The Belarusian saddened her fans in this year’s Australian Open, going down in the first round after enduring a loss to unseeded Jessica Pegula.

After skipping a host of tournaments post the setback through injury, Azarenka had a late-season rebirth as she reached the semi-finals and the quarter-finals of the 2021 BNP Paribas Open and the 2021 National Bank Open in Canada respectively.

As the new Grand Slam season is about to start, preparations for the players are going in full swing, with players eager to get every bit of game practice under their belts to be in the ideal shape for the start of the 2022 tour.

For former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka, the additional training almost proved to be a disaster as she found herself bolted inside her local tennis court after closing time.

The Belarusian’s latest pre-season practice featured the 2-time Grand Slam winner having to hop a fence after the tennis club she was practicing in, locked the gates on her and her team.

While the 32-year old finally made her way out with the help of 2 members of her team and a handy towel, her fence-hopping method left many fans astounded. “There is an interesting lot of fans and trollers who are surprised that I can’t jump the fence ‘correctly’,” Azarenka wrote following the widespread surprise of her followers.

Currently ranked World No. 27, Vika will be looking to get lots more practice under her belt before hitting the Australian Open courts, where she won both of her Grand Slam titles in 2012 and 2013.

The former World No.1 would look forward to an injury-free season as she would like to see herself roll out a repeat performance down under.
