Serena overcomes Sharapova to claim the 2012 Olympic gold medal in style

Serena overcomes Sharapova to claim the 2012 Olympic gold medal in style – Flashback

Serena overcomes Sharapova to claim the 2012 Olympic gold medal in style : In 2012 Serena became the first tennis player in the game’s history with all four Majors & the Olympic gold in both singles & doubles!

Over 3 decades back Steffi Graf captured all 4 Major titles & the singles gold medal at the 1988 Olympics for the so-called Golden Slam. The only player who had the prospect of chasing those five titles after Steffi Graf was Serena Williams, completing a career Grand Slam already in 2003 when she won the Australian Open title, with enough time for adding the Olympic gold medal to her collection.

Steffi Graf 1988 Olympics
Steffi Graf 1988 Olympics

Nonetheless, it seemed to be moving away from her for years, missing the events in 2000 & 2004 & losing in the last 16 to the final champion Elena Dementieva at Beijing in 2008. Still, Serena tasted the Olympic triumphs in the doubles after winning the gold medal with her older sister Venus in 2000 & 2008.

Then when she was 30, Serena had a perfect opportunity to finally take the Olympic singles gold in London 2012. The American returned to Wimbledon a few weeks after winning the fifth singles title at the All England Club & delivered amazing tennis in all six meetings.

Thus, she became the first tennis player in the game’s history with all four Majors & the Olympic gold in both singles & doubles! Serena had to defeat five top-20 opponents en route to a momentous achievement, which was hardly an hurdle for her after dropping 17 games in 12 sets (never more than 3 in a single set) to earn the title. Clearly that year was Serena’s golden year!

Serena Williams 2012 Golden Slam

On August 4, Serena Williams ousted the former grand slam champion Maria Sharapova 6-0, 6-1 in a rapid 62 minutes, notching her 6th win over the Russian in 8 matches to welcome the Olympic glory. This was the picture-perfect revenge for that 2004 Wimbledon final loss when Sharapova was blazing all guns at the tender age of 17. However 8 years down the line Sharapova’s games was nowhere near that level & never stood a chance against the mighty opponent.

Serena had twenty four winners & just 7 unforced errors in what has been one of the best matches she ever played, dictating both serve & return to leave Maria miles behind.

Serena Williams upbeat about the US Open as she recovers from her leg injury

Serena Williams upbeat about the US Open : Serena Williams’ agent Jill Smoller has given a short but upbeat update on her client’s health. According to Smoller, Serena is undergoing physiotherapy and hopes to be back in time for the last Grand Slam of the year – the US Open.

Williams sustained an injury to her right leg after stumbling on court during her 1st-round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich in London at Wimbledon 2021. The 23-time Major champion received therapy but was incapable to resume and conceded the match to the Belarusian.

The American star did not disclose the magnitude of her injury at the time, and neither did her coach Patrick Mouratoglou. Nevertheless, Mouratoglou did reveal that Serena Williams was able to walk, suggesting that the injury was not as severe as originally feared.

Now, Serena’s agent Jill Smoller, in a new chat with TMZ Sports, declared that the 39-year-old is “doing great.”

“She’s doing great,” Jill Smoller said when asked how Williams is feeling.

Jill Smoller was then requested to give an update regarding William’s return to the tour. Smoller said the Serena was presently undergoing treatment, but seemed convinced that the World No. 16 will be fit in time for the US Open.
Serena Williams won the US Open in 2014 and has not been able to rise to the same task again, hopefully 2021 could hold another win for her.

Serena Williams has a glittering track record at Flushing Meadows, despite last winning the title in 2014.

Since her initial US Open title in 1999, the American has added 5 more titles in New York to take her overall tally to six, one short of her haul the Australian Open and the Wimbledon.

Since securing the title for the 3rd time in 2008, the American has never lost prior to the semifinals in New York. During this phase, she has managed 3 runner-up finishes (2011, 2018 & 2019), 4 semifinal finishes (2009, 2015, 2016 & 2020) and 3 title-winning campaigns (2012, 2013 & 2014),

While Serena has secured more titles during this phase at the Australian Open – Melbourne (4) and Wimbledon – London (5), she has also experienced quite a few early exits. William’s record at Roland Garros – Paris stands at two titles in Paris since 2008, but she has also crashed out 7 times prior to the last 16.

Serena’s fans have been starved and are looking forward to this US Open quite eagerly in the hope to see her triumph for one more time at Flushing meadows.

Serena Williams boasts of her beach body in single-piece swimsuit

Serena Williams boasts of her beach body in single-piece swimsuit : Serena Williams and her husband Alexis Ohanian step out for some enjoyment in the sun in the South of France.

Serena Williams really knows how to light up her fans.

Just days after getting knocked out of the 2021 Roland Garros in the 4th round, the tennis star was snapped relaxing with her family in the South of France — and flaunting her beach body in the process.

In the photos Serena Williams, 39, is seen wearing a bright one-piece swimsuit while spending time with their 3-year-old daughter, Olympia, and her husband, Alexis Ohanian.

Williams looked happy as she seen having lots of fun and spending true quality family time though she did seem to be shocked at one point by the heat at sea that day.

At one point, both Serena Williams and Ohanian, 38, dared the high dive, and the Reddit co-founder was seen daringly propelling himself into the air before landing in the water.

While Serena Williams and little Olympia — who love a pairing fashion moment — didn’t quite match up for this outing, both of their swimsuits did highlight colorful patterns with blue and pink though. Ohanian’s blue-and-pink floral swimming shorts also coordinated with the gals’ beachwear styles.

Earlier in the week, Serena Williams, who has won the title at Roland Garros three times over the years, lost 6-3, 7-5 to Elena Rybakina. When questioned if this might have been her final appearance at the French Open, she said, “Yeah, I’m definitely not thinking about it at all. I’m definitely thinking just about other things, but not about that.”

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Novak Djokovic chasing their own piece of history in Sunday's final

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Novak Djokovic chasing their own piece of history in Sunday’s final

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Novak Djokovic chasing their own piece of history in Sunday’s final : Djokovic & Tsitsipas will battle it out for the French Open men’s singles title on Sunday.

Djokovic is striving to become the 1st male in the open era to have bagged all Grand Slams titles at least twice, while Tsitsipas is eyeing a maiden Grand Slam victory.

Djokovic has the psychological upper hand entering this match as he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in a thrilling five-set affair at Roland Garros in last year’s semi-finals.

In this year’s semi-finals Novak Djokovic produced one of the best performances of his illustrious career by defeating the Rafa – the king of clay in an astonishing contest on Friday, prevailing 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 in a four hours & 11 minutes encounter on the famous Parisian Clay.

The challenger standing in his way in the finals is 5th-seed Stefanos Tsitsipas – appearing in his first Slam final.

Djokovic described his triumph over Rafael Nadal as a match he will “remember forever”, and, while he is the obvious favourite to capture his 19th Grand Slam crown on Sunday, he asserts complacency will not be a factor.

“It is not the first time that I play an epic semi-final in a Grand Slam & then I have to come back in less than 48 hours & play finals. My recover abilities are pretty good, I must say, throughout my career. I know what I need to do. Obviously, Tsitsipas, first time in the finals of a Grand Slam. For him it’s a great achievement, but I’m sure he doesn’t want to stop there. He’s in great form. I think he leads rankings, race rankings, this year. He’s had his best results overall. I think he matured as a player a lot. Clay is arguably his best surface. We played an epic five-setter last year in the semis here. I know it’s going to be another tough one. I’m hoping I can recharge my batteries as much as I can because I’m going to need some power & energy for that one.”

Novak Djokovic

The 34-year-old Serbian’s pursuit of history has invariably dictated the narrative, but Tsitsipas has carved his slice of history in Paris, & now he is just one win away from his first Slam title.

“All I can think of is my roots, & where I came from. I came from a small place outside Athens. My dream was to play here, to play on the big stage of the French Open one day. I never thought I would do it,”

Stefanos Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Novak Djokovic Head-to-Head

Djokovic has won 5 of the pair’s 7 meetings, & the world No 1 triumphed in their solitary best-of-five-sets encounter at the French Open last year, resisting a terrific fight from the 22-year-old in an enthralling semi-final.

Stefanos Tsitsipas has lost all 3 of his clay-court meetings against the 18-time Grand Slam champion – including their most recent battle in May’s Italian Open.

However, there are positives for the 5th seeded Greek. As Djokovic conceded himself, Tsitsipas has developed as a player over the last 12 months. He has won more games on clay in 2021 than any other player – lifting titles in Monte Carlo & Lyon.

Experience could be vital in Sunday’s men’s singles finale. Tsitsipas is playing in his maiden Grand Slam final, while the Serb is set to feature in his 29th, having now made the final of each Grand Slam at least 6 times – another all-time record for Djokovic.

The men’s singles French Open finals promises to be a fascinating contest. The 22-year-old Greek brags a big first serve, a booming forehand and, despite his lofty frame, his movement permits him to control from the baseline.

Nevertheless, he is up against perhaps the best returner of serve the sport has ever seen. Djokovic’s display against Nadal defied logic – as he was brutally worn down by the persistent genius of his opponent.

We have come to anticipate the unexpected at this year’s French Open, but we can be assured that history will indeed be made on Sunday, in what guarantees to be a deserving finale.

While Sakkari & Tsitsipas make Greek fans proud in Paris rumours emerge about thier romance

While Sakkari & Tsitsipas make Greek fans proud in Paris rumours emerge about their romance

While Sakkari & Tsitsipas make Greek fans proud in Paris rumours emerge about their romance : It is a moment of enormous joy for Greece as two of its top stars are in the semi-finals at Roland Garros 2021. While Stefanos Tsitsipas has been making life difficult for the top seeds in Paris, Maria Sakkari toppled this year’s defending champion, Iga Swiatek, & is seen now the favourite for the title.

Both Maria Sakkari & Stefanos Tsitsipas are good friends off the court & even post photographs of each other on social media – mainly Instagram. There were even rumours that the two Greek stars had dated each other some time in the past. However, it has been established that there is no truth in those rumours.

“It is exactly the same as when two actors who have been starring in a romantic movie are seen together in public. People assume that they are a couple”

MARIA Sakkari

Maria Sakkari cleared the air & mentioned that even though they were really close, they hadn’t dated each other at any point in the past.

Also interesting to point out that the two defeated Roger Federer & Belinda Bencic in the mixed doubles at the Hopman Cup 2019. It was in fact after this that they came forward & stated that they were not dating.

Rumors swelled when Stefanos Tsitsipas kissed Sakkari on her cheek in 2019.

After their triumph over Federer & Bencic at the Hopman cup 2019, Tsitsipas gave Sakkari a peck on her cheek, which made fans even more curious about their romance. However, Sakkari clarified that it was just an innocent kiss & there was nothing suggestive about it. Back then, she also mentioned that one could never be sure about what would transpire in the future.

“The kiss he gave me was completely natural. It came after we won against [Roger] Federer & [Belinda] Bencic. The kiss meant nothing erotic. One never knows what the future will bring, but that’s how it is,”

MARIA Sakkari

Maria Sakkari and Stefanos Tsitsipas both look capable and poised to win the respective titles at Roland Garros. Maria Sakkari has earned her spot as the favourite at this point, however Stefanos Tsitsipas would have to toil past Nadal or Djokovic if he gets to the final.

Schwartzman’s focus is on his game and not Nadal’s at Roland Garros

Schwartzman’s focus is on his game and not Nadal’s at Roland Garros : Diego Schwartzman who reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros is doing his best to not think about Rafael Nadal and the task ahead of him.

“I think at the start of every game against Nadal, you have to walk on the court thinking only about winning the match, to have openings, to get breaks,”

Schwartzman

The Argentine concedes that it will take a very elevated level of tennis from him just to have good fortune at Roland Garros.

Nadal leads the ATP tour H2H against Schwartzman by 10-1.

“If you keep thinking about the 4-5 hours you are going to play, if you imagine Rafa in Roland Garros, he’s very tough to play, You have to enter the game & think only about the tactics, plan how to execute and play your best game.”

Maria Sakkari created Greek history in Paris at Roland Garros : The No.17 seed becomes the 1st Greek woman to get to the last 8 of a Grand Slam in the Open Era

Maria Sakkari has been at the cusp of making it into the Grand Slam league for a long time and she finally done so at Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

Sakkari roared past 2020 Roland-Garros runner-up Sofia Kenin 6-1, 6-3 in 68 minutes to become the 1st Greek woman to reach the quarter-final at Roland Garros.

Sakkari is a resolute force of nature who carries her heart on her sleeve, sometimes to her own harm – but not so much this week at the French Open.

Her defeating the No.4 seed leaves her only with one threat and that of the defending champion Iga Swiatek. Sakkari locks horns with her in the QF.
