Tsitsipas’ mother Julia Salnikova is all praise for her son. Stefanos Tsitsipas’ mother Julia dives deep into memory lane when she recalls the time when the Greek sensation exhibited signs of his incredible determination when he was just a kid.

Stefanos Tsitsipas was especially delighted of winning his Maiden Master ATP 1000 in Monte Carlo recently. His mother, Julia Salnikova, also won a competition in the Principality when she was a junior about 40 years back.

Julia had an eye opening and candid conversation with local outlet Hellomonaco chatting about her son. Julia was asked to go into detail on a specific situation when Stefanos showed his enormous resolve when he was a kid.

Julia revealed:

“Firstly, it was all about tough preparation and discipline. Not everyone is capable of that from a very young age. As a teenager, Stefanos was imposed a stringent diet for medical reasons. He almost completely had to exclude gluten, sugar and lactose which is a truly disastrous for a young child. He bravely pursued it for numerous years. Just think what depth of character he had even at that tender age! At the same time, he was training and travelled almost all the time, carrying special foodstuff in his luggage.”

Stefanos is now in Barcelona, where he aspiring to bag his first ATP 500 title. Stefanos Tsitsipas is seeded number 2 in Catalonia, and that he will lock horns with Antoni Munar Clar in his opening match.

Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev will lead the draw in Rotterdam after the withdrawal of Nadal.

Rafael Nadal will not participate in Rotterdam. The Ruler of Clay was keen to get back to play this tournament after opting to skip his customary tour in Latin America most probably because of the snags caused by the pandemic.

Nadal’s injury and changes in his schedule

Rafa sustained an injury to his back during the 2021 Australian Open. He coped to play the slam in Melbourne, but it appears that the injury was not resolved when back in Spain. Therefore, Rafael Nadal had to adhere to the advice of his doctor not to play the forthcoming ATP 500.

“It is with great unhappiness that I have to forgo my participation at Rotterdam. As most of the fans know, I experienced some back related problems in Melbourne that actually began in Adelaide and continued during 2021 Australian Open. We found an interim solution that permitted me to play without discomfort in the second week of the tournament,”

“Once I got back to Spain I go to see my doctor and jointly with my team they’ve recommended not to play this approaching week. I was really looking ahead to coming back to Rotterdam and The Netherlands since it’s been ages since I played there this was the ideal year for my calendar. I hope to play there soon in the near future. All the best to the event, always a top class tournament,” he added.

Will Rafa be Skipping Miami too?

Rafa hasn’t slated any other event in the next few weeks. In principle, he is expected to play the ATP1000 in Miami (22nd of March). However, it is quite likely that he will be back to contests only for the clay-court season to get the best preparation to win another Roland Garros trophy and clinch his 21st slam.

The Rotterdam Open entry list and the main draw

Regrettably, many players withdrawn from the Rotterdam event in the last few days. Many decided to compete as they were still grappling with injuries from Australia. Pablo Carreno Busta and Matteo Berrettini decided not to participate because of their abdominal injury. The tournament will also be missing Taylor Fritz, Denis Shapovalov and Casper Ruud.

As a result, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Alexander Zverev will be the top seeds.

Greek top seed and world number 7 Stefanos Tsitsipas has called unpredictable Nick Kyrgios the black sheep, adding that he likes attention and nothing is wrong with it.

Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas has elaborated in detail about his “not very close friend” Nick Kyrgios ahead of the 2021 Australian Open. Stefanos has applauded the mercurial Australian player but also called him the black sheep of tennis.

Nick Kyrgios, the Australian world number 47 is known for his electrifying shots and hot-headed mindset on the court. He can be very often seen puzzling the fans and the opposition with his natural talent. Also, he never shies away from expressing his view or blasting the champions of the game including the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. There have also been times when Nick Kyrgios has gotten into prolonged quarrels with the match officials during live matches.

“Nick, he is the black sheep of men’s pro tennis. He likes to do unstable stuff. He likes to be the center of attention, let’s not refute that. And there is nothing wrong with that.” Tsitsipas said on the No Challenges Remaining radio podcast from his quarantine in Melbourne.

“He has his own character, which turns out, some people adore him for it. A lot of people despise him for it and don’t comprehend it. But there are some people who follow him almost as though he is some sort of cult leader. I think it’s absolutely fine and every sport needs that. It is entertaining and it is fun. It’s something exceptional and unique that not many players have.

“I wouldn’t say we share a very close friendship but we do connect on FaceTime occasionally and at strange times. Sometimes even at 1 am. I don’t get it.

“As long as he’s not discourteous,” he said. “He may have been a few times and that’s not cool but when he’s in full respect of the game and does the right thing, it’s certainly enjoyable to watch,” he added.

Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas have known each other since 2014 but it took 5 years for the pair to play doubles together at a event in Washington DC.

Nick Kyrgios himself has acknowledged in the past that he has been carefree about his tennis. But what Tsitsipas saw then was not the same. It was after the doubles pair lost in 3 sets in the round of 16.

“He is very manic. Despises any loss. Trust me. He just can’t stand to lose. I didn’t anticipate it myself,” Tsitsipas said from pre Australian Open 2021 quarantine in Melbourne on the No Challenges Remaining podcast

“We played doubles in Washington DC and after he came off the court he was so frustrated, so angry and I was in shock. I didn’t think he would react that way.”
