The Aussie star’s sudden retirement has shocked the world, but it seems to be a foregone conclusion that Iga Swiatek will take her place in the WTA rankings.

Though the 20-year-old Swiatek is a colossal 2,204 ranking points behind Barty, but there will be a new number one in the next few days and the second-placed Pole is in the best position.

Ashleigh Barty said yesterday that she will withdraw herself from the WTA rankings after revealing her retirement, paving the way for Poland’s Iga Swiatek to become the world’s top seed.

The 3-time Grand Slam-winning Barty has held top spot for more than couple of years. The world of tennis has been stunned with the Aussie star’s decision to quit at a very young age of 25.

Swiatek, who shot to fame by winning the Roland Garros title in 2020 and has shown incredible consistency since, told the media at the Miami Open that she is trying not to think about it too much.

Swiatek is only 691 points ahead of 3rd-ranked Maria Sakkari of Greece after winning at Indian Wells last week, her 2nd title in as many tournaments after her victory in Doha in February.

Speaking in public for the first time since revealing her shock retirement, Barty told a press conference in Brisbane: “My name will be removed from the list in the next ranking”.

Under the emerging scenario Sakkari and Swiatek have already formed quite a rivalry. What seems obvious is that if Swiatek blinks or wastes her No. 1 status opportunity, then Sakkari will be there close at her heels to grab it from her.

Sakkari and Swiatek locked horns for the first time at last year’s French Open and since then have had four more meetings.

Sakkari dominated Swiatek last year, beating the Pole at the Ostrava, Roland Garros and WTA Finals.

This year has started off slightly better for Swiatek but their rivalry is palpable.

During the final, the Spaniard was in agony due to issues with his torso and had trouble breathing.

Upon further investigation by a medical team, it has been discovered that he endured a stress crack in the third rib. He is going to need full rest to recover and will be out of action for around four to six weeks and almost certainly won’t compete at the Monte-Carlo Masters or the Barcelona Open. His participation at the French Open also hangs in the balance.

It is suspected that in his semi final match against Carlos Alcaraz he may have injured himself internally, without realizing. It is also possible that the stress from that game spilt over onto the finals and that is when the pain of the injury came out. The muscles around the chest and rib cage come into motion during powerful serves and top spin strokes. It is quite possible that is the root cause of his injury.

Why has Ashleigh Barty called it quits?

In an unanticipated move, World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty announced that she was stepping down from professional tennis. She hasn’t participated since winning the Australian Open in January 2022 and in an Instagram update, made known her decision to hang up her racquet for good at such an early stage in her career, she is just 25 years of age.

Teenage meets Experience as Coco Gauff and Barty Lock Horns: Ashleigh Barty and Cori Gauff are going to lock horns in the quarter-final in Rome. The American teen sensation has stunned the fans with a couple of exceptional wins against the likes of Aryna Sabalenka and Maria Sakkari.

Challenging Ashleigh Barty will be another daunting task for Coco Gauff, but she is not the only one that will be very cautious about that match since the Barty may also be sensing the clear and present danger that Coco poses.

After defeating Veronika Kudermetova, Ash Barty talked about tackling Coco Gauff and why the American rising star is such a tough opponent.

Barty on her part has looked almost unstoppable since resuming the tour after a nearly one-year break. The Aussie juggernaut has been on a roll through the first quarter of 2021, accumulating titles at the Yarra Valley Classic, Miami and Stuttgart.

She did stumble at the final obstacle in Madrid, but Barty seems to be competing with rekindled vigor in Rome. Barty has registered dominating wins in her first couple of rounds, trouncing Yaroslava Shvedova and Charleston champion Veronika Kudermetova while giving away no more than six games per match.

Up next for Barty is the lively Coco Gauff, whose ball-striking and intelligence contradict her age.

Gauff has had a good start to the year, marked with a few notable performances here and there. A semifinal appearance at Adelaide and a couple of quarterfinals at Dubai and Charleston have propelled her to a career-top ranking of No. 35.

The 17-year-old has carried some of her impetus into Rome too. She began her campaign this week with a 3-set win over the tricky Yulia Putintseva. Denying to show any fatigue, Gauff battled for another 3 sets to oust seventeenth seed Maria Sakkari.

The American went on to record the 3rd top-10 win of her career in the Round of 16, as she dispatched Madrid champion Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.

It is but obvious that Gauff would have got a huge boost of confidence with her recent accomplishments. She would now be considering her prospects of an upset against Barty too.

Ashleigh Barty and Coco Gauff will be meeting for the first time on the tour when they clash in Rome.

Given the stunning form she is in at the moment, Ashleigh Barty is the favourite to triumph in this battle of youth and experience. The Aussie’s incredible foot speed and diversity make her a perilous opponent for anybody on clay.

Those qualities were noticeable in Gauff’s decisive win over the in-form Sabalenka, where she had 80% conversion on break points. She would be keen to remain in the same form against Barty.

That said, Barty is just too strong at this point in time. Gauff may have the means to make the match a contest, but continuously dealing with the Aussie’s slice-and-dropshot sequence might be too daunting a task for her at this age. That said this match can go either way, and the better player of the day will come out the winner.

Naomi Osaka has just captured her 2nd Australian Open and fourth career slam. The Japanese champion exhibited remarkable and solid tennis and she is widely deemed to be the face of WTA tennis and the player to beat.

Naomi stands at 2 slams right now and for some bizarre reasons, she is rated only no.2 in the world after Ashleigh Barty who has yet to get a major title to her name. The justification for this inconsistency is that the WTA decided to protect the rankings because of the pandemic, which made a case for good judgment only until a certain point. The world No 1 has never worked unaided and, as she parades on the way to the 2021 Australian Open final, continues to prosper with her support crew.

It is common to hear Ash Barty speak in first-person pronouns, and she does so in plurals. “We” while she is implying that it not only about her and that her crew is very much part of the journey.

Normally tennis is looked at as an individual sport. Barty’s is the sole name atop the WTA rankings. But this Australian has never functioned alone. The “we” implies her team. “They” points to her “family”, some in blood, others in every way but.

Barty’s crew is a power packed with coach Craig Tyzzer, mentor Ben Crowe, golfer boyfriend Gary Kissick, and a “certain Englishman” among the minor congregation in her box. She explains this “red cherry face” is her latest strength and shape up coach, Mark Taylor.

Barty’s game is hers, but it is also one built on resourcefulness garnered from elite sporting relationships with surfer Stephanie Gilmour and Richmond Tigers captain Trent Cotchin, among others.

It is such resourcefulness that helped her to easily overcome the fourth-round challenger Shelby Rogers, in a 6-3, 6-4 result that sets up her entry into the last eight with a quarter final clash Karolina Muchova, the Czech who played her magic on Elise Mertens.

Monday night was predictable in all ways but one – as roars from the “crowd” were heard only from the TV screen, Barty and Rogers heard nothing as they played to an empty stadium.

A crowd filled with fans can impact a player’s game in significant ways, lift a qualifier to excellence or sink the best competitor on the planet. Barty, on the other hand, could play on the moon in indistinguishable fashion. Any drop in form or mid-match inconsistency is usually only down to core forces or injury.

Indeed, the only thing she bears similarity with Nick Kyrgios is that the pair feature in a ubiquitous Uber Eats advertisement (alongside Sacha Baron Cohen). Her face shows no signs of Kyrgios’s bling and bluster, instead she is the personification of modesty. She is not one of these celebs who thrive on the word of the paparazzi instead she had recently stated that “that external recognition” is not her thing.

Calm consistency is the way she operates, and Barty does not so much play as conduct surgery. Barty is characterized by her subtle game style as she silently goes about her job of winning without any fanfare or roar.

Why does the Italian brand Fila mean so much to Ashleigh Barty

Top-seeded tennis star Ashleigh Barty been associated with the Italian brand Fila since 2016.

Australian tennis ace Ashleigh Barty has continued her collaboration with Italian sportswear manufacturer.

The 24-year-old world number one has been supported by Fila since 2016 and has subsequently gone on to bag the French Open Grand Slam title in 2019. The duration and monetary terms of the new agreement have not been disclosed.

The extension has been revealed days before the start of the 2021 Australian Open on 8th February, with Barty seeking to become the first Australian woman to win the tournament since Christine O’Neil in 1978.

Fila is celebrating the Barty era by creating the ‘Barty Bundle’ to celebrate her accomplishments and impact both on and off the court.

The bundle will be a special, limited promotional range from Barty and Fila, available to female budding tennis players at various tennis academies in Australia and the US, as well as via Ash Barty’s social media channels. The gifting will consist of a custom-made Ash Barty training tee and a face mask. Both pieces will display Barty’s brand-new ‘AB’ emblem.

“Ash’s impressive rise to the top of the tennis cosmos over the past several years has been phenomenal, and we couldn’t be more excited to continue our relationship with her,” said Gene Yoon, global head at Fila.

“Ash is a extraordinary individual who has made an deep impact not only through her play on-court but also through her activities off-the-court in her local society and she is a role model for young women around the world. We look ahead to being a part of her continued accomplishments for many years to come.”

Barty added: “Fila has been by my side during the most thrilling times of my career, and I could not be more pleased that they will go on to support me in my tennis journey. They have been an important part of my triumphs on the court, and I am privileged to continue to stand for such an iconic label with a rich legacy in tennis and beyond.”

The renewal with Barty revives Fila’s participation in tennis. In addition to event alliances with the likes of the BNP Paribas Open, the Tennis Hall of Fame Open and the Rogers Cup, the sportswear company is an official contractor to the Argentine Tennis Association (AAT), Tennis Canada and Junior Tennis Champions Center, among others.

Although she has been ranked WTA World No.1 for over a year now, there isn’t much fanfare surrounding Ashleigh Barty. The Australian native is undoubtedly one of the least flashy players on Tour, which led to her being underestimated early in her career.

However, fast-forward to a few years later and Barty has accumulated a vast number of trophies and accolades, culminating with her winning her maiden Grand Slam singles title at the 2019 French Open. The 24-year old ascended to the top of the rankings soon after, although she still maintains her low-profile and humility.

Despite her meteoric rise and newfound confidence, Barty did not experience much success on her home soil. Prior to 2019, the Aussie had never made it past the third round of the Australian Open. Furthermore, she had never won a title at home, always coming up short in the lead-up tournaments to the first Grand Slam of the year. However, Barty finally made the quarterfinals at Melbourne in 2019, the year she won her first Grand Slam. After securing the No.1 ranking a few months later, she would begin the 2020 season in Australia as the top-ranked female player

Having suffered an early round loss to qualifier Jennifer Brady at the 2020 Brisbane International, Barty would finally win her first trophy on home soil at the Adelaide International the following week. Buoyed by this victory, the Queensland native was the favorite to win the Australian Open title. Additionally, she was also creating history as the first Australian woman to play in the tournament while ranked World No.1.

Barty struggled in the opening round against the unseeded Lesia Tsurenko, but overcame her opponent in three sets. Her route to the final began to generate more interest as she progressed through each round of the tournament. With an entire nation watching her, perhaps the pressure began to mount on the young Aussie’s shoulders. She would face American Sofia Kenin in the semifinals, a career-best appearance for both ladies. However, Barty would lose the match 6-7(6) 5-7, after having a set point in each set.

Following the COVID outbreak, Barty chose not to play for the remainder of the season citing health and travel concerns. Nonetheless, she has held her No.1 ranking due to the current revised WTA ranking system which prevents players from losing ranking points due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the 2021 Australian Open only less than two weeks away, the pressure is on Barty to produce a repeat performance from last year’s event. However, there will be some expected resistance from the likes of 2019 champion Naomi Osaka, defending champion Sofia Kenin, along with veterans Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka. Furthermore, her rivals have all experienced playing in front of limited fans, an experience which will be foreign to the Australian.

Currently scheduled to compete in the Melbourne Summer Series, which consists of several tournaments that will be used as a tune-up for the Australian Open, Barty has expressed excitement and optimism at returning to the courts. The World No.1 will lead the field at the Gippsland Trophy and Yarra Valley Classic, two WTA 500 events that will be played simultaneously and are set to commence on January 31st.
