Rafa is undoubtedly the “best player in Davis Cup history”: Sergi Bruguera. Rafael Nadal is the Star of The Spanish Team at Davis Cup.

During a recent press meeting, Spain’s Davis Cup skipper Sergi Bruguera expressed his opinion that Rafael Nadal is the “best performer, in Davis Cup history”.

Nadal is not present in the Spanish side due to a foot injury, which is what Bruguera reckons could be the “big difference” in the 2021 edition of the tournament.

Fans overjoyed by Rafael Nadal’s comeback news

Rafael Nadal has been a part of 5 Davis Cup-prize winning teams. Spain secured the Davis Cup title in 2004, 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2019. The icing on the cake is Nadal himself as he boasts of an impressive 29-1 win-loss record at the event, including an active winning stretch of 29 matches.

Spain is effectively the defending champion, given that the competition did not take place in 2020 due to the pandemic.

When asked if the pandemic has eroded some lustre from the Spanish side, the two-time Roland Garros champion indicated that Rafael Nadal’s absence means that the Spanish team will have a definitive void may not even be considered as the favourite without him in their ranks.

Despite Rafa’s absence, Spain still have Pablo Carreno Busta, old campaigner Feliciano Lopez, and emerging star Carlos Alcaraz in their ranks. As such, Bruguera considers his team is still “very tough”.

Spain has been drawn at the Davis Cup 2021 in the same group as the Russian Tennis Federation and Ecuador. And devoid of Rafael Nadal in their ranks, defeating their fellow Europeans could be a Herculean task for the Spaniards given that the Russian side features 4 top-level players — Andrey Rublev, Daniil Medvedev, Aslan Karatsev, and Karen Khachanov.
