The 20-time slam champion skipped the Olympics in Tokyo and Wimbledon during a bid to urge back to full fitness before the US Open.
However, after a shock defeat at the hands of Lloyd Harris at the Washington Open, Nadal withdrew from the US Open and announced he would be taking the rest of 2021 off thanks to a foot injury.
After remaining quiet on the progress of his rehab, Nadal excited fans after confirming he would play within the World Tennis Championship next month.

“My plan is to play Abu Dhabi in December then during a tournament before Australia then the Australian Open,” Nadal said.
“That’s my current target.
“We’re working hard to actually see that it happens.
“The injury in my foot still must get a touch better, but I’m already putting in training of almost an hour and a half each day so that’s positive.
“Some days are better than others, but I’m beginning to see the positive days surpass the negative ones.
“So, I’m on the proper track. I’m training, I’m feeling better. I’m back on the tennis court.”
Fans were rightfully delighted at the announcement.
While Nadal has signalled his intention to travel for a 21st slam, World No.1 Serbian Novak Djokovic hasn’t committed to the Australian Open yet.
