Novak Djokovic admits that Pete Sampras is his role model

Novak Djokovic admits that Pete Sampras is his role model : Novak Djokovic was proud after he secured first place in the world rankings at the end of a tennis year on Saturday for the seventh time in his career. In doing so, he improved pete Sampras’ record.

“I’m proud and very happy,” said Djokovic after the scoop, which he won by winning in the semi-finals of the Masters tournament in Paris against the Pole Hubert Hurkacz (3-6, 6-0 and 7-6 (5)). “It’s always my big goal to be in first place at the end of the season.”

“It’s crazy to do it for the seventh time and catch up with my childhood hero and role model Sampras. I am incredibly grateful and blessed to be in this position. And what a way to achieve that, in such an exciting game.”

Djokovic had to go deep to deal with Hurkacz. He lost the first set to the Pole, but regrouped and won the second set without giving up a single game. The third and deciding set turned into a tiebreak, which Djokovic won with great pain and difficulty.

In 2011, Djokovic finished the year as the number one in the world rankings for the first time. He then did so in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2020. Sampras was the world number one from 1993 to 1998 at the end of the year.

The record for Djokovic follows in the year in which he also equaled the record number of Grand Slam titles. After his victory at Wimbledon, the Serb is on twenty major titles, as many as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. On Sunday, he will play the final of the Masters tournament in Paris against Daniil Medvedev, who in September in us open final Djokovic still held off a historic 21st Grand Slam title.

Roger Federer’s Turbo Recovery post third knee surgery : Roger Federer ‘feeling good’ as he recuperates from latest knee surgical procedure

Roger Federer has earlier said he would be out of action for “many months” because he required a 3rd procedure on his right knee in eighteen months in a bid to return to competition.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion was last seen performing at the Wimbledon this year.

Roger Federer says he is “feeling strong & eager for what’s to come” as he regains his strength post his latest knee operation at the age of 40.

Federer had 2 surgeries in 2020 which resulted in more than a year of recovery before a return to action in March, however, he endured another impediment during his run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in July.

“I’m feeling in all honesty really good … things are not as bad as I thought they would be, but I’m recuperating well and the post operative therapy is going really good,” Federer told Eurosport.

“I’ve had no complications at this time. I’m feeling great and thrilled for what’s to come. I wish I could be back on a tennis court as fast as possible, but I have been advised to take baby steps to that goal.

“It’s a slow phase right now. And I got to take it one small step at a time. The going is good so far and I’m very happy with my progress.”

Federer, who skipped the US Open as a consequence of the surgery, also thinks it remains possible for the Calendar Slam to be viable after Novak Djokovic fell at the decisive hurdle in New York earlier this month.

World No 1 Novak Djokovic was attempting to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win all 4 Grand Slams in the same year – and outdo Rafael Nadal and Federer with a record 21st major – but went down in unceremonious fashion to Daniil Medvedev.

“I think it is likely that it’s going to come about again,” said Federer. “We saw it with Djoker, myself and Nadal that we come exceptionally close.

“But I also believe you need a bit of luck. You need dedication, strength … that’s why I think it’s going to be tough. But the potential of Calendar Slam cannot be ruled out.
