The tournament was inaugurated in 2017 with the with the introductory edition hosted in Prague. Chicago was the venue for the 2nd edition of the competition following which the event returned to Europe, with the historic Swiss city of Geneva hosting the event in 2019.

Boston hosted the Laver Cup in 2021 after a COVID-induced rescheduling the previous year. Team Europe has been skippered by Bjorn Borg while John McEnroe has commanded the World side in every edition of the competition thus far.
