Coco Gauff emerges as US Open title favourite after impressive victory over Madison Keys

Coco Gauff emerges as US Open title favourite after impressive victory over Madison Keys : Coco Gauff conquered fellow American Madison Keys 6-2 6-3 and progressed to the pre quarter finals round of the US Open for the 1st time.

After dropping serve at the very start of the match, the super agile Gauff quickly took control, won four games one after the other and kept Madison Keys rattled from there on. Playing in the 3rd round at her home major for the 7th time, Madison Keys protected two break/set points at 5-2 down, but the skilled American simply avoided the inevitable as Coco Gauff grabbed the deserved prize on her 3rd set point.

There were authoritative groundstrokes on both sides, as if we were viewing a men’s tennis match.

The tipping point was that Gauff moved better and looked more hungry and that is perhaps what kept her motivated for this 3rd round victory. At times she looked like a predator running towards prey.

The 18-year-old Gauff, feeling buoyant in her signature New Balance sneakers, raced to a 4-1 lead in the second set and it didn’t seem like Madison Keys would get an opportunity to turn things around.

However, Keys took advantage of Gauff’s moments of weakness, and served to level the second set to 4-4. This flare of the 20th seed’s possible revival was quickly put out by Gauff, as the teenager retained her absolute supremacy.

If she keeps this game quality, Coco Gauff is DANGEROUS! In the previous round, the 12th seed hit the third-fastest serve in US Open history!

Teenage meets Experience as Coco Gauff and Barty Lock Horns

Teenage meets Experience as Coco Gauff and Barty Lock Horns

Teenage meets Experience as Coco Gauff and Barty Lock Horns: Ashleigh Barty and Cori Gauff are going to lock horns in the quarter-final in Rome. The American teen sensation has stunned the fans with a couple of exceptional wins against the likes of Aryna Sabalenka and Maria Sakkari.

Challenging Ashleigh Barty will be another daunting task for Coco Gauff, but she is not the only one that will be very cautious about that match since the Barty may also be sensing the clear and present danger that Coco poses.

After defeating Veronika Kudermetova, Ash Barty talked about tackling Coco Gauff and why the American rising star is such a tough opponent.

“Coco has demonstrated that she enjoys to bring her best tennis against the performers that challenge her the most. She’s played an excellent tournament thus far. She’s got the capability to take the game on. She’s assertive, she can run, she can trust her legs,” said Barty.

“I think it’s going to be crucial for me to try to get the game back on my terms as frequently as possible. I know when things start to go her way, the way she likes to play, she’s very dangerous and terrific at what she does. I think it’s going to be a brand new challenge, a fresh slate for both of us.”

Barty on her part has looked almost unstoppable since resuming the tour after a nearly one-year break. The Aussie juggernaut has been on a roll through the first quarter of 2021, accumulating titles at the Yarra Valley Classic, Miami and Stuttgart.

She did stumble at the final obstacle in Madrid, but Barty seems to be competing with rekindled vigor in Rome. Barty has registered dominating wins in her first couple of rounds, trouncing Yaroslava Shvedova and Charleston champion Veronika Kudermetova while giving away no more than six games per match.

Up next for Barty is the lively Coco Gauff, whose ball-striking and intelligence contradict her age.

Gauff has had a good start to the year, marked with a few notable performances here and there. A semifinal appearance at Adelaide and a couple of quarterfinals at Dubai and Charleston have propelled her to a career-top ranking of No. 35.

The 17-year-old has carried some of her impetus into Rome too. She began her campaign this week with a 3-set win over the tricky Yulia Putintseva. Denying to show any fatigue, Gauff battled for another 3 sets to oust seventeenth seed Maria Sakkari.

The American went on to record the 3rd top-10 win of her career in the Round of 16, as she dispatched Madrid champion Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.

It is but obvious that Gauff would have got a huge boost of confidence with her recent accomplishments. She would now be considering her prospects of an upset against Barty too.

Ashleigh Barty and Coco Gauff will be meeting for the first time on the tour when they clash in Rome.

Given the stunning form she is in at the moment, Ashleigh Barty is the favourite to triumph in this battle of youth and experience. The Aussie’s incredible foot speed and diversity make her a perilous opponent for anybody on clay.

She has been serving well in this tournament, as is apparent from the 9 aces and 80% first-serve success rate she delivered against Kudermetova. Barty’s return game was also remarkable in the match, as she converted 6 of the 7 break point opportunities she got.

The top world seed has been doing practically everything right, and looks determined to grab her 2nd claycourt title of the year.

However, Coco Gauff will pose a unique challenge altogether. The teenager can move fast on clay and is a tenacious competitor, who has already acquired the art of being persistent before pulling the trigger.

Those qualities were noticeable in Gauff’s decisive win over the in-form Sabalenka, where she had 80% conversion on break points. She would be keen to remain in the same form against Barty.

That said, Barty is just too strong at this point in time. Gauff may have the means to make the match a contest, but continuously dealing with the Aussie’s slice-and-dropshot sequence might be too daunting a task for her at this age. That said this match can go either way, and the better player of the day will come out the winner.

Top tennis stars and their stance on getting vaccinated

Top tennis stars and their stance on getting vaccinated

Top tennis stars and their stance on getting vaccinated – Cori Gauff, Nadal, Serena, Barty & Naomi in focus.

Cori Gauff and Rafael Nadal are very clear about their views on the vaccine: they would like to be vaccinated when it’s feasible.

The American teenager had a Q&A style interview on Instagram and when asked about if she wants to be vaccinated, she answered that she has all the plans to get a shot saying “I believe in science.”

Rafael Nadal also voiced his readiness to get a vaccine.

The King of Clay was especially discouraged, notably during the initial part of the pandemic, and he believes that everything has to be done to halt this dreadful virus.

During a latest press conference in Monte Carlo, the world number 3 remarked:

“Vaccine is the only answer to go beyond the pandemic. We need to understand that. I know a few people have side effects, but the coronavirus effects are fatal. I will get my jab as soon as I can.”

Serena Williams has been known to have full faith in science and vaccinations.

In October 2009 the world followed her while she visited Ghana, where she joined health workers and volunteers giving children vaccines against measles and other diseases. One can very well image his positive mindset towards the Coronavirus vaccination!

Andy Murray went on record, as early as November 2020, to state his opinion on the vaccination. He said then that it should be made mandatory for players to be vaccinated before participating in any tennis tournaments.

On 31st March 2021, both the top seeds Ash Barty and Naomi Osaka threw their support behind receiving the vaccine when they are eligible.

While many players have full faith in science some other high profile tennis players are got different views.

Novak Djokovic is not known to be a fan of vaccines. Having said that and despite his opinion many believe that he will make an exception in the case of the ongoing pandemic.

Many other younger and high profile players such as Andrey Rublev, Diego Schwartzman, Elina Svitolina and Aryna Sabalenka didn’t sound as keen as Coco Gauff and Rafael Nadal and others to get vaccinated.

As of now, both the ATP and the WTA tours are just urging their players to be vaccinated if they can.

Venus and Serena Williams have motivated many tennis players with their amazing careers both on and off the court. Coco Gauff is one of the players that have always admired the Williams sisters.

Coco’s father Corey Gauff has started training his daughter just like Venus and Serena’s father Richard.

During a recent conversation, the 17 year old Coco confirmed that Williams’ accomplishment and way to play tennis stirred her father to initiate Coco to the sport.

“What drew me to the Williams sisters was how they play,” Gauff said recently.” And just witnessing someone coming from where they came from make a huge mark on tour is certainly inspiring for my dad to get me to start playing. I kind of shaped parts of my game after both the sisters.”

The new American teen phenomenon acknowledged that she is also inspired by Serena and Venus’ activism outside the court when battling for critical things like equality:

“And certainly the off-court, what they’ve done for the sport and fighting for egalitarianism and all that is greatly inspiring. And that’s also why I constantly look up to them.”

Coco Gauff’s Solid Return Being Put To Test Against The Sakkari Blistering Serve at Abu Dhabi

It’s been just a couple of days and we find ourselves neck deep into the new WTA season.

Things are getting pretty heated up at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Women’s Tennis Open.

A nail biting 2nd-round match awaits us as teenage sensation Cori ‘Coco’ Gauff takes Maria Sakkari on Friday.

Both players are in great form and have registered emphatic victories in their opening-round fixtures.

The teenage American was particularly impressive in her 6-0, 6-1 demolition of seasoned ITF player Ulrikke Eikeri.

The Greek top seed Sakkari on her part squashed the challenge of rising star Anastasia Potapova, with a solid 6-4, 6-2 win.

Maria Sakkari vs Coco Gauff head-to-head

Maria Sakkari had the statistical advantage over Coco Gauff 1-0 in their head-to-head record.

Maria Sakkari vs Coco Gauff prediction

On her day, Maria Sakkari is one of the strongest ground-stroke-makers on the WTA tour who can trouble the likes of Serena Williams.

It remains to be seen how Coco Gauff copes with Sakkari’s venomous groundstrokes given the sheer pace on them.

The 16-year-old Cori is well-equipped defensively, but her Greek opponent has the firepower to hit through her consistently.

To counter that offense, Gauff will need to be on top of her game at all times.

The American, generally known for her solid returns, will need to bring her A-game in that department to break the rhythm if Sakkari’s blistering serve gets into blazing mode.

All things considered it is difficult to pick a favorite for this match.

Coco Gauff Slams Sexist Remark On TikTok

Coco Gauff Slams Sexist Remark On TikTok

Coco Gauff Slams Sexist Remark On TikTok, Says Sports Is About Skill Not Gender.

Budding Tennis star Cori Coco Gauff gave a firm reply to a sexist TikTok user who disrespected her making a sexist remark that she wouldn’t be able to compete or beat a male tennis player because she’s a girl.

Best known as Coco in the tennis circuit, the 16-year-old said that playing better sports is not about gender but essentially about the skills. Gauff added, “If you’re a real athlete, then you know where I’m coming from.”

The American teenage star had defeated legend Venus Williams and Naomi Osaka at the Australian Open 2020 and she won her first singles title at the tender age of fifteen. Despite all of her efforts and acolades she was criticised for being a girl in the professional tennis circuit. However, an upset Gauff slammed the person in more than appropriate fashion.

“Bro what do you not understand she plays GIRLS tennis, he plays BOYS tennis, the skill gap is immeasurable,” the comment said, adding “A pro girl wouldn’t even win boys states.” Setting the record straight. “If you think that you’re better than me because of the sole fact that you’re a boy and I’m a girl, that doesn’t make any sense,” she said calling out the person. She claimed, “If you could say you could beat me because you think your skill level is better than mine, I respect that, we could go out there and we’ll compete and we’ll see who’s better,”.

Youngest WTA winner Coco Gauff

in 2019 she won her first WTA title and became the youngest to do so in the last 15 years.

Nicole Vaidisova held the earlier record of being the youngest WTA winner since 2004 when she won her 1st title.

Breaking her record, Gauff overcame the challenge by much experienced Jelena Ostapenko 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 to lift the Upper Austria Ladies trophy.

Currently ranked 48 Cori Gauff will face off with 260th ranked Ulrikke Eikeri in the 1st round of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Women’s Tennis Open for the 1st time in their career.

This match is scheduled for 11:30 AM GMT on 6th Jan 2021.
