Serena Williams expresses her support for Meghan post her interview with Oprah:

“I know first hand that sexism and racial discrimination along with the media belittle women and people of colour,” wrote Serena Williams

Serena Williams has been friends with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, since about 7 years.

Tennis star Serena Williams has not minced any words in shouting out her support of her “selfless friend, Meghan Markle” after the latter raised accusations of bigotry against the British Royal Family in a historic interview with Oprah Winfrey. During the 2-hour special that aired on CBS, Harry and Meghan made a host of astonishing exposures, including the fact that Meghan’s request to search for help for her worsening mental health – aggravated by negative press coverage – was denied by the establishment, and that members of the royal family were apprehensive about “how dark” their unborn baby could be.

Serena Williams, who has encountered racist assaults for most of her career, said that she could identify with Meghan in that they have both had to fight sexist and bigoted institutions.

Meghan, who is African-American, became the focus of chauvinist and racist reporting in British tabloids after she wedded Prince Harry in 2018. Opening up on an onslaught of adverse media coverage she confronted as part of the royal family, Meghan, 39, told Oprah that the British media drove her to the point where she started experiencing suicidal thoughts.

Harry said that his family’s persistent hush on the issue of British tabloids and their discriminatory coverage of his wife “hurt” him. “The unhappiest parts I guess was over 70 members of parliament, female representatives of parliament .. came out and called out the colonial connotations of articles and headlines printed about Meghan, yet no one from my household ever said anything over those 3 years,” he said.

In a thought posted on Instagram, Serena Williams said that Meghan’s words explained the “pain and malice she’s suffered.”

In her Instagram shoutout, Serena William further said that we must “acknowledge our responsibility to decry malicious, unsubstantiated gossip and tabloid journalism.”

She said that she wished to see Meghan’s daughter, her own daughter Olympia and all others grow up in a culture driven by respect.

Meghan Markle and Serena Williams met for the first time in 2014 and became good friends. Serena Williams was among the very few of close friends invited to Meghan Markle’s royal wedding in 2018. She also co-hosted Meghan’s baby shower the following year in New York City.
