“I’m planning to buy her 700 roses” – When John McEnroe tried to make amends with Serena Williams after controversial comment

While promoting his book ‘But Seriously’ in 2017, John McEnroe, intentionally or unintentionally, found himself in predicament over his comments about Serena Williams and her legacy.

Speaking to National Public Radio, the seven-time slam champion stated that although he believed Williams to be the greatest female tennis player ever, she wasn’t the simplest among all the players.

“Best female player ever, no doubt . But if she played on the men’s circuit, she’d be like 700 within the world,” McEnroe said. “That doesn’t imply that I don’t think Serena is a formidable player. I do and on her day, Serena Williams could defeat some players, I believe, because she’s so very strong mentally that she could overcome some situations where players would choke because she’s been in it so many times. But if she had to only play the circuit, the men’s part of the tour, that might be an entirely different story.”

There was an enormous backlash after Jouhn McEnroe’s comments as fans criticized him for being insensitive, particularly for saying those things when the twenty three-time slam champion was pregnant. Serena took to social media to hit back at McEnroe, asking him to respect her and leave her out of his statements.

“Dear John, I hve great regard for you but please keep me out of your statements that are not based on facts,” Williams tweeted.

“I’ve never taken on anyone ranked “there” nor do I have any plans to do so. Respect me and my privacy as I’m trying working on my pregnancy. adieu sir,” Serena added.

John McEnroe made a public appearance on the Dan Patrick Show shortly after Serena Williams’ tweets and stood by what he said blatantly ignoring the backlash. He even suggested a matchup between the American legend and either Federer or Rafa Nadal to seek out out what would happen.

When asked what he would tell Serena Williams when he saw her next, the 63-year-old stated that he would buy her 700 roses.

And this week, she surprised her fans by demonstrating yet another skill by nailing Megan Thee Stallion’s “Body” dance challenge, adding a tennis spin to the sports dance choreography.
