Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev will lead the draw in Rotterdam after the withdrawal of Nadal.
Rafael Nadal will not participate in Rotterdam. The Ruler of Clay was keen to get back to play this tournament after opting to skip his customary tour in Latin America most probably because of the snags caused by the pandemic.
Nadal’s injury and changes in his schedule
Rafa sustained an injury to his back during the 2021 Australian Open. He coped to play the slam in Melbourne, but it appears that the injury was not resolved when back in Spain. Therefore, Rafael Nadal had to adhere to the advice of his doctor not to play the forthcoming ATP 500.
“It is with great unhappiness that I have to forgo my participation at Rotterdam. As most of the fans know, I experienced some back related problems in Melbourne that actually began in Adelaide and continued during 2021 Australian Open. We found an interim solution that permitted me to play without discomfort in the second week of the tournament,”
“Once I got back to Spain I go to see my doctor and jointly with my team they’ve recommended not to play this approaching week. I was really looking ahead to coming back to Rotterdam and The Netherlands since it’s been ages since I played there this was the ideal year for my calendar. I hope to play there soon in the near future. All the best to the event, always a top class tournament,” he added.
Will Rafa be Skipping Miami too?
Rafa hasn’t slated any other event in the next few weeks. In principle, he is expected to play the ATP1000 in Miami (22nd of March). However, it is quite likely that he will be back to contests only for the clay-court season to get the best preparation to win another Roland Garros trophy and clinch his 21st slam.
The Rotterdam Open entry list and the main draw
Regrettably, many players withdrawn from the Rotterdam event in the last few days. Many decided to compete as they were still grappling with injuries from Australia. Pablo Carreno Busta and Matteo Berrettini decided not to participate because of their abdominal injury. The tournament will also be missing Taylor Fritz, Denis Shapovalov and Casper Ruud.
As a result, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Alexander Zverev will be the top seeds.

Currently perched comfortably at no.2, Nadal played his last match on the 17th of February when he conceded to Stefanos Tsitsipas 3-6 2-6 7-6(4) 6-4 7-5 in the quarter of the 2021 Australian Open.
