Ashleigh Barty and Danielle Collins into another tense battle!

Danielle Collins vs Ashleigh Barty preview

World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty will begin her Adelaide International title defence with a difficult match against Danielle Collins, in what is a rematch of last year’s semifinal.

Barty entered as a wildcard into this Adelaide International event, looking to quickly rebound back from her shock quarterfinal loss at the year’s first Major.

The Aussie had made a roaring start to 2021, rounding into top form prior to the 2021 Australian Open. Showing no signs of lockdown fatigue, Barty cruised to the title at the Yarra Valley Classic after an eleven-month stoppage.

But her loss to Karolina Muchova in the quarters at the 2021 Australian Open would’ve hurt, and Barty would be keen to shove aside that setback and get back to dominant ways.

It was at this WTA 500 event last year that Danielle Collins played one of the finest matches of her career, giving quite a fright to Ashleigh Barty herself. It took Barty 3 rough sets to ultimately suppress Collins’ challenge.

Ashleigh Barty vs Danielle Collins H2H

Ashleigh Barty has the upper hand over Danielle Collins with a 3-0 in the head-to-head, having won all three of their preceding meetings.

Their most recent meeting, as stated above, was at Adelaide a year ago. The Aussie had to toil really hard to come up with a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(5) win.

Danielle Collins vs Ashleigh Barty prediction

One of the fiercest sluggers of the ball, Danielle Collins will look to bring her hard-hitting game when she takes the court against Ashleigh Barty. Collins can also combine things and mix them up with the occasional dropshot, and Barty needs to be prepared for that.

An 8-3 recent track record in Australia this year shows how much Collins has enhanced her game. The American is being more persistent in the rallies now, and has improved her return game too.

Interestingly, Collins has pushed Barty to 3 sets in 2 of their three meetings. Needless to say, she will try repeat this same on Wednesday – especially given the self-belief she has built all summer.

That said, the American does have a tendency to have times in her game where she tries to control her aggression. That was apparent even against Zheng on Monday, as Collins squandered her 5-2 lead by her unforced errors.

Those are the instances that Barty will look to exploit. The World No. 1 has also likely recuperated from the left thigh injury that she was hurting from during her Australian Open campaign, and would be keen to put on a show for her home fans.

This could be another tense affair between the two, but Barty’s composure, variety and overall strength could tilt the balance in her favor.
