Aryna Sabalenka Sails Though in Abu Dhabi and Bags 3rd Straight Title
Aryna Sabalenka won her 3rd straight tour title and fifteenth straight match by defeating Veronika Kudermetova 6-2, 6-2 Wednesday in the 2021 Abu Dhabi Women’s Open final.
The 4th-seeded Belarusian, who won indoor competitions in Ostrava and Linz at the end of last season, last lost in the 3rd round of the Roland Garros in October 2020.
“I was doing everything I could in each match from the beginning [in Abu Dhabi] and I’m happy to start the season with a title,” Sabalenka said. “I’m going to Australia, I’m confident with one thing, that I will do everything I can to win matches.”
As a result of this victory Sabalenka will rise 3 places to 7th in the rankings. She is 9-4 in career finals & 6-0 in the last sixteen months. Kudermetova on the other hand was playing in her first tour final.
“I think today is not my day because I was very slow,” Kudermetova said. “I had a lot of mistakes.”
The 2021 Women’s Abu Dhabi Open was hastily organized by the WTA to offer players more court time after the 2021 Australian Open was rescheduled for February amid the Covid-19 pandemic. It is the only WTA Tournament outside Australia in the run-up to the 1st Grand Slam of the year.
Sabalenka and Kudermetova will now travel to Melbourne, where they will spend 14 days in the mandatory quarantine with limited practice opportunities ahead of the 2021 Australian Open and its warm-up events.
